who We Need - A Short Series
A new hWD series on the difference between generalist vs. specialist functions.
The choice between working with a generalist or specialist significantly impacts how effectively a startup team operates. At oAT, our job is to guide startups in deciding which mix suits them best. Contrary to popular methodology, not every team member on an early-stage team should be “of all trades”; startups benefit from a balanced mix of both skill profiles. And not every founder needs to be a generalist either. A combination creates a dynamic team structure where skills complement each other, enhancing collaboration and efficiency.
Misusing specialists as generalists or vice versa can hinder a startup's progress. Each team member brings specific skills that, when used correctly, can propel the organization forward. As we've seen firsthand, understanding how to leverage these roles is crucial for startups aiming for growth and innovation.
Over the next five weeks, we're shifting focus from our usual “how We Do" content to explore the differences and impacts of roles within startups, including:
Product Manager vs Product Generalist
Head of Operations vs Operations Generalist
Marketing Specialist vs. Marketing Generalist
Head of Sales vs. Sales Generalist
HR Specialist vs People Generalist
Through this series, we aim to provide founders with insights into how generalists and specialists contribute uniquely to a startup's success. We’ll share experiences from generalists about their roles and work that’s made an impact, offering a closer look at the startup ecosystem's most valuable problem-solvers.
We’ll kick off our deep dive starting with product roles next Thursday. We're excited to share what we've learned and help founders make informed decisions about building their teams. See you there!
